GRSG Funding
Our PhD Candidate, Rebecca England, has recently been awarded funding by the Geological Remote Sensing Group (GRSG) to test her newly developed SpectroGas in the field.
The SpectroGas is being developed to provide a low-cost alternative to existing gas sampling equipment in volcanic environments. The Spectro-Gas uses optical cavities to enhance the interaction path length of light from broadband sources, which allows the spectroscopic measurement of SO₂ and H₂S. The result is a sensitive, selective, and efficient gas detection technique which is lower in cost than existing gas sampling systems and resolves issues surrounding frequent calibration and equipment replacement.
Rebecca’s field campaign will involve testing the SpectroGas alongside existing instrumentation to compare performance. She plans to travel to the Reykjanes Peninsula in Iceland, where she will be working alongside Dr. Melissa Pfeffer of the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO) to access a variety of degassing volcanic sites.
